2019 Carignan
Old Vine, Organic

2019 Carignan
2019 Carignan - View 1
2019 Carignan - View 2

From a 75 year old vineyard, head trained, dry farmed, certified organic. Elegant and aromatic, juicy and easy drinking, with soft structure from 50% whole cluster, perhaps more akin to Cru Beaujolais than Carignan.  8 months in old, neutral French oak. 200 cases crafted, 12.5% alc.

Note in 2019 we dropped production of this wine from 500 cases to 200, so that we could make the Wiley Carbonic, and Bucking Luna sparkling red, so it will not be around nearly as long this time!

Vineyard Notes
Carignan has a long history in CA, and with over half of its plantings removed, is now gaining a reputation as variety well suited to the Mediterranean climate, capable of producing quality wine. Planted over 75 years ago (back label is incorrect) by Rick’s father, Rick Trimble now manages this 10 acre, head trained, organically certified block, which we lease 50% of. While much of Hopland is very hot, this area is much cooler, enjoys a 30-40 degree diurnal shift at night, with the grapes typically taking until mid October to reach 21-22 brix.
Production Notes
This vintage was 50% whole cluster, lightly food tred, then fermented in the small vessel ½ ton picking bins. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast, with no additions or cold soak, with two punch downs a day, by hand. Once fermentation is complete, the wine was gently pressed to neutral French oak barrels, without settling, for 6 months elevage. The wine remained on heavy lees for 4 months, racked twice for bottling, with no fining, filtration, or additions other than a small amount of SO2.
