Skin Fermented - 'Orange' Wines

A unique wine from an obscure grey skinned grape, originally from the Jura.  The grapes are the only planting in CA, from a 40 year old vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Fermented with native yeast on the skins for five days to extract color, flavor and texture, then aged in neutral barrels for 8 months.  Similar to the 2017 thru 2019 releases, this vintage is destemmed, allowing a fresh and vibrant expression.

The 2020 vintage produced half its normal yield due to frost and rain shatter, so grab some while you can. The 2020 vintage is also more intense in flavor as a result of the low yield. Only 125 cases made.

“Centime” harkens back to France's copper penny, and celebrates our full skin-contact series (aka orange wine). The grapes are destemmed and fermented on the skins for 10 days, then aged in neutral oak 10 months. This is a non traditional orange wine, and at 11.3% alc, is light and fresh, while still textural. If you've always been curious about orange wines, but not a fan of oxidized wines, this is a great introduction to the style! 70 cases made.

Dolce and Sofia, our affable miniature Sicilian donkeys inspired this wine. Destemmed and left on the skins to start a native yeast fermentation, then after 5 days pressed to finish fermentation and aged in neutral French barrels. The 5 days of skin contact impart a copper hue, reminiscent of Italian Ramato. The taste is uniquely its own, landing somewhere between an orange wine and a rosé.

Fun and fresh, with lingering savory notes. A wine as unique as our Dolce. Hee Haw!

The 2019 was featured in the NY Times by  Eric Asimov in 'The Polarizing Power of Orange Wine'  and in Bloomberg by wine writer Elin McCoy as 'The Best 50 Wines under $50, 2019'

Who says orange wines have to be tannic and/or oxidized? This is a gentler, more approachable orange wine.

Centime, French for Penny, is Two Shepherds small annual production of skin fermented Rhone white wines, known as "orange" wine, because of the color the skin contact gives. The 2017 release is 100% Grenache Blanc from the Russian River Valley, Sonoma. This is out final release of Centime as Grenache Blanc, with the switch to Vermentino for 2018+.

Magnums! Only 12 made.

Trousseau Gris is an incredibly rare, grey skinned variety.

The 2015 vintage was a shift in style and closer to  an “orange” wine, more tannic, structure, slight oxidation. Very different than the 2017-2019, but beloved by orange wine 'purists.'

100% whole cluster, foot tread, adding more complexity, tannin, and a deeper orange color. Five days of skin skin contact before pressing to barrel.

Trousseau Gris is a very obscure grey skinned variety, originally from the Jura in France, and a 'unicorn' even there. The famed Fanucchi Vineyard is the only planting of Trousseau Gris in California, with a total of just 10 acres planted over 40 years ago. The Fanucchi Vineyard is adjacent to our farm in Fulton, which is how William first started making Trousseau Gris, first for personal consumption, and then by demand, he aquiesced into allowing a non-Rhone a part of our portolio.

Fermented the first 5 days on the skins, this release has a medium orange, pink color, intense aromatics of a white, and the texture of a light red, basically refusing to be put in a category. Total Lot: 125 cases

Who says orange wines have to be tannic and/or oxidized. If you have had William's unique style of red wines, you may appreciate Centime, a gentler, more approachable orange wine.

The 2013 release is mostly Grenache Blanc from Santa Ynez, with a litte Marsanne and Roussanne from El Dorado blended in.

This wine was crushed and fermented on the skins for 12 days until dry, exactly like a red wine, then very lightly pressed by hand to a neutral barrel, where it aged for 10 months.

Nice structure, minimal tannins for an "orange" wine with aromas and flavors of citrus peel and spice. Recommended serve with food.
